How to enable IIS Manually when "IIS could not be automatically enabled on this operating system"

Last Updated: Sep 28, 2016 06:10PM PDT
Fastvue Sophos Reporter attempts to install and configure it's pre-requisites (.NET and IIS), but in some cases, a system may not allow the automatic install of IIS. In these cases, IIS will need to be enabled manually.

Enabling IIS manually is quite easy, however there are a few sub-components that you also need to enable, namely IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility, and ASP.NET 3.5.

On Windows Servers, this is done through Server Manager. Here are the instructions for Windows Server 2012 R2 (instructions may vary slightly for other Windows Server operating systems):
  1. Open Server Manager and go to Manage | Add Roles and Features
  2. On the Server Roles page, check Web Server (IIS), and expand the feature to reveal the sub-components
  3. Expand the following folders and check these sub-components:
    • Web Server (IIS) | Web Server | Application Development | ASP.NET 3.5
    • Web Server (IIS) | Web Server | Security | Windows Authentication
    • Web Server (IIS) | Web Server | Security | URL Authorization
    • Web Server (IIS) | Management Tools | IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility | IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility
Note: When checking some of the components above, you may be prompted to install other pre-requisites as well. Select Yes, or OK when prompted to do this. Windows Authentication and URL Authorization is not critical, but recommended if you want to secure the Fastvue Reporter website.
  4. On the Features page, ensure .NET Framework 3.5 Features is checked
  5. Finish the Add Roles and Features wizard to complete the installation
Here's a screenshot showing the installed Role Services

For desktop operating systems such as Windows 8.1 and 10, this is done via Programs and Features | Turn Windows features on or off
  1. Go to Control Panel | Programs and Features | Turn Windows features on or off
  2. Check Internet Information Services, and expand the feature to reveal the sub-components
  3. Expand the following folders and check these sub-components:
    • Web Management Tools | IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility | IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility
    • World Wide Web Services | Application Development Features | ASP.NET 3.5
    • World Wide Web Services | Security | Windows Authentication
    • World Wide Web Services | Security | URL Authorization
Note: When checking some of the components above, you may be prompted to install other pre-requisites as well. Select Yes, or OK when prompted to do this. Windows Authentication and URL Authorization is not critical, but recommended if you want to secure the Fastvue Reporter website.
  4. Also ensure .NET Framework 3.5 is an enabled feature
  5. Click OK to install/enable IIS.

Once these components have been enabled, you should now be able to install Fastvue Sophos Reporter successfully.
